Social media requirements today require proficiency in many applications and tools and many people just don’t get it. How many people really want to tweet about their day, post things on your wall for you read and live for the public viewable social interaction that the media and internet companies want you to believe. Not many, as a matter of fact usage outside of certain demographics is nearly zero. Now, some good ideas have come from social media like real-time information and accountability through the eyes of many. A huge affinity channel caused by followers of influencers, celebrities and media. A simple mention of a product can spell doom or success based on the exposure of the brand to the sometimes wholly unqualified comments. The internet has become a cesspool of opinion that has been bought, branded or manipulated to create or influence a consumer in some way.

This social media is not a useful channel of information for a consumer. However, it is very useful for real-time trending of brands or events. The chatter on social media is coming to a science that can predict the success of a movie that has been released for less than one day. The mining of opinion and trend of the brand value and perception has become big business through social media, and perhaps facebook and twitter may find a business model where they can actually start to turn a profit.
